Customized Training Programmes

 

LBC also organizes training programmes customised to the need of the participating organization/institute.

 

Earlier Programmes

 

For Human Settlement Management Institute (HSMI), the training arm of HUDCO, 2010

 

Two concurrent training programmes, titled 'Re-skilling of skilled and semi-skilled construction personnel on alternative construction technologies' and 'Alternative Innovative Construction Technologies for Engineers and Building Centre Project Managers' have been conducted by LBC for a selected group of twenty seven masons/artisans. The six-day pro gramme included a mix of teaching methodologies such as class room sessions, hands-on sessions and site visits along with masons to enable collective learning.

 

 

For University of Iowa, 2009-14

Five exposure programmes, arranged by the University of Iowa, have been conducted on Laurie Baker's philosophy and practices by LBC every year starting 2009. First year included eighteen day long programme for six students; second programme included sixteen scholars; third included eighteen and fourth included fifteen scholars and fifth had a participation of twenty one scholars from various Universities of USA and Canada.

The programmes were tailor-made for the groups; the par ticipants were exposed to alternative approaches to building design and construction along with related topics in habitat studies. Kerala's development experience, functioning of Panchayat Raj, Women's Organizations and work of voluntary organizations in the field of development etc. were included as required.

 

For Indigo Holidays, Goa, from  2011  

A six day long exposure programme was designed and conducted by LBC for thirty five undergraduate students of architecture to introduce them to the fundamentals of the principles followed by Laurie Baker. M/s Indigo Holidays of Goa, a tour agency specialising in alternative architecture theme based tours, recognised the need for organizing such a programme with LBC as an important avenue of information dissemination and assured continued programmes. In continuation to the earlier programme, Indigo Holidays organised a second tour for thirty eight participants from Maharashtra and Goa. The four day programme consisted of class room sessions, site visits and hands-on experiences.

For Vadodara Design Academy (VDA), Baroda, Gujara t and College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, 2012

A customised three day exposure programme on cost effective construction techniques was held at LBC for thirty eight students of architecture of VDA, and forty one students of architecture of College of Engineering.

 

For Academy of Architecture, Mumbai, 2012

This training programme has been designed by LBC at the specific request of the Academy to train their final year students of architecture. The training programme included lecture sessions, audio visual presentations, interactive sessions, hands-on training and site visits. With a view to give special emphasis on practical training, a number of sessions on hands-on training in various aspects of Baker's construction techniques, using cost-effective building materials, were conducted.

 

Southern Regional Workshop, 2012

IIT, Delhi and the Human Settlement Management Institute (HSMI) of HUDCO have established a Rural Housing Knowledge Network for the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. LBC has been chosen to function as the Southern Regional Secretariat for the project. The first regional workshop was organised by LBC at Thiruvananthapuram in March, 2012, which was attended by about 100 experts from South India. LBC continues to contribute to the project in terms of information, data, networking etc.
